“Chaturdha Murti” (Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Shree Sudarshan) return from Gundicha Temple to Shreemandir being placed in the Chariots during “Bahuda Yatra”(Return Chariot Festival). After completion of all the rituals, ‘Pahandi’(procession) is followed and the Chariots and pulled by the devotees. There is a tradition that ‘Chaturdhamurttis’ are offered ‘Poda Pitha’ (a baked cake, specially prepared) at Mausi Maa Temple. This temple is situated near Balagandi. It is the abode of Devi Ardhashanee, regarded as the ‘Mausi Maa’ (Maternal Aunt) of Lord Jagannatha. The servitors of ‘Mausi Maa’ temple prepare the special cake from the previous day. These servitors have been authorized to perform this particular service which is included in Record of Rights of the Temple. So the servitors enjoy this particular assignment hereditarily. Record of Rights of the temple has identified these servitors as those of Ardhashanee Temple.
‘Poda Pitha’ is a tasteful dish, loved and liked by Odias’. Flour, cheese, sugar, pista along with spices such as cardamom, raisin and cloves are usually included in the preparation of this cake. As we mark substantial reflection of Odia culture in the conventions and rituals of Lord Jagannatha, the offering of ‘Poda Pitha’ has been popularly acknowledged as a remarkable service to the deities.
